What is ISO/IEC 42001?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard for an AI management system (AIMS). It sets requirements for how an organization governs its use of AI: context, leadership, policy, risk and impact assessment, controls, monitoring, internal audit and improvement. It governs practices, not any single model.
Both exist. An organization is certified by an accredited certification body after a two-stage audit. An individual earns a credential such as Lead Implementer, which demonstrates competence to do that work. One does not substitute for the other.
Choose by the job. Lead Implementer builds and runs the management system, as employee or consultant. Lead Auditor assesses someone else’s. If you will write the policy and assemble the evidence, take this one.
No. The program starts with the structure of a management system standard. People who have run one before finish faster, because the AI-specific parts are the new material for them.
CPD accredited by the CPD Standards Office (UK); certificate and badge issued by the Global AI Certification Council. It is not an ISO/IEC 17024 personnel certification. PECB holds UKAS 17024 accreditation for 42001 since August 2026; if your employer requires that, take that route.
AIGP (IAPP) is broad AI governance and policy knowledge. AAISM (ISACA) sits closer to AI security management. ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer is the most operational: building and evidencing a management system against a certifiable standard.
